Dubout: The Art of Drawing Everything

Dubout: The Art of Drawing Everything pays tribute to Albert Dubout (1905–1976), one of the greatest French illustrators of the 20th century, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death. Born in Marseille, Dubout explored all forms of graphic expression — press illustration, book illustration, posters, painting, cinema, advertising, and animation — with unmatched virtuosity and humor.

His drawings, published in over 250 newspapers and translated internationally, depict everyday life with tenderness and irony. The exhibition presents his two main periods: the dense, meticulous compositions of the 1930s, followed by his more streamlined post-war works, while highlighting the consistent human insight in his vision.

Humor, social commentary, and iconic characters — including the famous “Dubout couple” — are featured alongside his cat drawings and his significant collaborations with Marcel Pagnol. A discreet painter as well, Dubout also left 77 oil paintings, reflecting his southern roots and prolific creativity.

Decorated with the Légion d’honneur and recognized during his lifetime, Albert Dubout remains today an essential reference in French illustration and caricature.
