Marseille at the maritime heart, collection of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Aix Marseille Provence

From May 7 to October 2, 2024, the Regards de Provence Museum, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and Metropolitan Industry Aix Marseille Provence, presents the exhibition «Marseille au cœur maritime» which is in correlation with the news of the Olympic Games of Paris 2024, where the port city and its harbor are honored with the organization of nautical competitions. It is in this spirit that the Regards de Provence Museum honours the exceptional cultural heritage of the Chamber of Commerce, wishing to recall its past and what participated in the history of the territory: the resources of the sea, the port and navigation.

With a corpus of varied works, the theme of the exhibition naturally revolves around the port of Marseille, its changing infrastructures and evolving ships, through the talent of artists with plural techniques and singular looks. Different faces of a maritime Marseille are highlighted by artists such as Alfred Casile, Emile Loubon, Raphaël Ponson, Joseph Suchet, Louis-Mathieu Verdilhan, Edmond Astruc and many others.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Regards de Provence Museum thus contribute to highlight the unique link that Marseille has with the sea. Participating in the construction of the history of the city still today, the pools will be shown as places of life, work, leisure, or simply as a place of departure or arrival at destination.

The CCIAMP, the first Chamber of Commerce in the world, created in 1599 because of the economic needs of the time, has always contributed to promote trade and maritime exchanges. An actor of its territory and beyond, the institution has acquired over the centuries a heritage collection, rich in testimonies of human activities. The archives it preserves bear witness to the international relations it has forged and maintained, both with diplomacy and with traders around the Mediterranean. The opening of the port to international trade, facilitated by an ideal geostrategic positioning for exchanges, is one of its most beautiful assets.

It was at the beginning of the 20th century that the Chamber decided to open a museum bringing together works of art and objects related to the navy, thus responding to the wish of many Marseilles. Over the years, supplemented by new acquisitions, its collections document in particular the evolution of the port.
